Although Hudson's Classic Grill's operation does not go back as far as the 1950's, it tries to recapture
the spirit and the food of the typical 1950's style restaurant, complete with a soda fountain. I understand
that Hudson's is actually a chain, although it operates mainly in Texas. Since it specializes in
hamburgers, french fries, and milk shakes, operating as a chain is probably sufficient to deliver
the desired results.
Because the American beef industry is not operated as it was in the 1950's, when cattle were
mostly raised on family farms and giant feedlots were virtually nonexistent, I do not have a great
desire to eat ground beef, a staple in America's diet of a half century ago. Sometimes I do succumb
to the desire to include beef as a source of protein, as I did when I ordered the Hot Roast Beef
Sandwich at Hudson's. According to the waitress this was one of Hudson's better offerings, but
I was not particularly impressed with the white bread, somewhat tough meat that was not my idea of
good roast beef, and the mediocre gravy. The least desirable part, though, was the mashed
potatoes that tasted like instant potatoes that had not been thoroughly mixed with the other ingredients.
The Vanilla Milk Shake I ordered tasted like it was made with pretty ordinary ingredients,
and was neither the best nor the worst one I have tried. Considering all the sugar and calories that
are contained in a shake, I would say the flavor was not good enough to offset all the negative
effects of it.
I do not know how this fits into the 1950's theme, but Hudson's has a full bar that seemed to be
more popular than the restaurant.
