Mix Express Asian Bistro
1001 University Ave.Las Cruces, NM
(575) 532-5553
The owners of Mix Pacific Rim Cuisine opened Mix Express in 2004, providing "Upscale, Oriental
Food To Go." Mix Express does have several small tables available for eating on premises, but
it gets quite crowded around noon time, especially with the University being located across the
street. Mix Express has an exclusively Japanese menu, serving tempura, teriyaki, sushi, donburi,
and yakisoba. The sushi menu is quite limited, with two of the three items being California rolls
and a "chef's choice" of sushi items. I asked what the difference was between Express and the
restaurant next door, and was told that Express was more "downscale" and at a lower price.
Having a lower price meant that my dining companion and I could sample several items, so
I feel that I have a good sense of the food being served. An order of California Rolls turned
out to be the best item-- it was quite fresh with a good flavor. I don't generally prefer to eat
California rolls, but I thought this one was good.
An order of Tempura was mediocre-- the vegetables were fresh but the batter was
soft and did not have the flaky crust to which I am accustomed.
The Yakisoba was just off-- the sauce didn't taste right and the vegetables were not
that good. It was perfectly edible, but was just the poorest representation of yakisoba I've ever had.
Combined with the fact that the restaurant does not serve hot tea, it was just a pretty disappointing
Asian food experience. I do not think my experience here was reflective of Mix Restaurant next door,
I just think something was lost in trying to serve Japanese cuisine as "fast food."
