Boomarang Diner in Bethany

Note: In 2014 this restaurant moved to its new location on N. W. 39th Expressway in Bethany. This review (and the photos) are for the old location at 3929 N. College Ave.

Boomarang Diner might be considered a local chain, starting in Muskogee and now having restaurants in numerous eastern Oklahoma towns as well as Fort Smith, Arkansas. The establishment seems to want to avoid large cities such as Oklahoma City and Tulsa, although the Oklahoma City suburb of Bethany is home to one of the newest branches of the restaurant.

Boomarang Diner should not be confused with Boomerang Grill, which is an Oklahoma City restaurant with about three locations (my mom tells me it was a more upscale restaurant with a large selection of items when they had a location on May Avenue north of Hefner Rd.). Boomarang Diner, though, is a 1950's style diner that specializes in hamburgers and it seems anything that can be fried. One of Boomarang's specialties is breakfast, and the restaurant starts serving at 7:00 a.m. daily.

I am at somewhat of a disadvantage since I did not try any of the items that were supposed to be the restaurant's specialty. Beef is usually not my first choice when there are other good choices, so I did not try the hamburger when I went to Boomarang Diner. Instead, the Chicken Fried Chicken looked good. This was a breaded chicken patty with white gravy on top, accompanied by a salad and french fries.

In my opinion the chicken was average, with nothing especially bad or good that I could say for it. The breading was heavy on pepper, and was also average when compared to other restaurants such as Ann's Chicken Fry. The gravy here, though, was superior to most other restaurants, and perhaps even to Ann's. This was a thick gravy without a heavy taste (something that I think is hard to accomplish). The gravy was not enough to make me really enjoy the entire meal, but it was a noteworthy feature.

The French Fries were very good, and were not greasy.

The Salad was average even though I got the ranch dressing which was the specialty of the restaurant. This was ordinary lettuce that probably would not provide much color to the salad if it did not have cheese on top.

The low point to the meal was the Texas Toast that left a bad aftertaste in my mouth (I am a fan of down home cooking, but not of greasy spoon restaurants of which I think the Texas toast was very representative).

Some aspects of the food here were very good, but it was very inconsistent.
