Thai Stop
14101 N. May Ave.Oklahoma City, OK

Those who remember the "old" Bangkok Restaurant owned by Fred and Lida may have also
had their introduction to Thai food there, as I did. I also know from comments I have received that
many people appreciated the food that was served at Bangkok, as is also the case with me.
The good news for many of us is that Lida's recipes live on at Thai Stop, a restaurant opened
at the beginning of 2009 by the couple who originally took over Bangkok when Fred and Lida
retired, but who now operate Thai Stop exclusively (and I hear that Fred and Lida drop in frequently
to enjoy the food at Thai Stop).
Thai Stop is a "bistro" style restaurant where patrons pay at the counter when the order is taken.
The restaurant is more modern and more "fast food" style than was the case at Bangkok (Thai
Stop makes a point to have all orders ready in a short amount of time). The menu is smaller than
at Bangkok, but otherwise I can say that "the tradition lives on" for those of us who still want the
opportunity to enjoy Lida's food. I know that the new owners have added a few things, and I would
not say the food is stuck in the past-- it just tries to keep the items people have been enjoying for
years and want to keep enjoying them.
To me the best item at Bangkok which has been carried over to Thai Stop is the Thai
style Hot and Sour Soup. This soup is so complex and flavorful I think it is worth a visit
to Thai Stop if you have never tried it. This comes in either individual servings or a family style
hot pot, and is served with chicken and over a dozen other ingredients (this is Lida's recipe).
Out of all the Thai restaurants I have tried across the country (literally from Seattle to Orlando)
I have never encountered a soup quite like this one , and it is one of my all time favorite Thai
dishes.
Another favorite soup of mine is Thom Ka Gai (coconut chicken soup) that is full of
Thai spices and flavor, although it is not at all spicy hot unless it is requested that way. This
soup only comes in a large serving (which is the same size as the hot pot shown in the photo
of the hot and sour soup). It is probably large enough to be a meal for some appetites, but not
for mine. The chicken, though, comes in a substantial portion.
Lemongrass Tofu was another one of my favorite items at Bangkok, and it was very
good when I tried it at Thai Stop. I like the tofu version, but it also comes with chicken or other
meats if preferred. To me the flavor of the sauce and the fresh vegetables are what make the
dish special. It can be either mild or spicy, but the "default" on it seems to be pretty spicy.
Pad Gra Prao (made with basil) is one of the better dishes I have discovered since
I started going to Thai Stop. Like the lemongrass tofu, I think one of the reasons I like the one
here is that the quanity and variety of fresh vegetables served (regardless of the meat chosen)
seems much greater than at most restaurants. The basil flavor was quite good, but I can say
the same at most other Thai restaurants. I really think that if you appreciate good quality fresh
vegetables, a trip to Thai Stop should definitely be considered. Also I am not always happy
with the tofu at restaurants, but I really enjoyed the tofu here.
The Yum Neua, or beef salad, sounded interesting, and it turned to to have very fresh
vegetables with good quality. The flavor, though, was not quite as vibrant as I have had with
other Thai salads.
Yellow Chicken Curry is one of the mildest Thai curries I have tasted, but it has one of
the best flavors of any I have tasted. I do not remember if I have sampled all the curries at Bangkok
and/or Thai Stop over the years, but I know the yellow one is the curry my family likes and always
orders. One reason I do not try the curries more often is that I usually prefer the vegetable dishes
(such as the ones already described). One good thing about Thai food, though, is that there is
something for just about everybody.
Kang Kua, or pineapple curry with chicken is sweeter than the yellow curry and seemed to
be less spicy, but has a good flavor for those who like it mild. This curry is only served at dinner, though
(after 3 p.m.). It is also available with shrimp.
The Crispy Chicken with Tamarin Sauce is something I waited to try until after I had
sampled a number of other dishes because I thought this one would be "American style"
(as some of the dishes at the "old" Bangkok seemed to be). I was surprised, though, that
this turned out to be one of my favorite dishes, and seemed to live up to the standards of Thai
style cooking fairly well. It had very good chicken (as has always been the case at both
Thai Stop and Bangkok), and this was probably the best feature of the dish. The breading
seemed very Asian style (like ones I have tried in other good Asian restaurants), and was
the feature that most surprised me with its quality. The sauce was very sweet and I would guess
was not truly authentic, but this did not detract very much from the overall dish (and I liked the
flavor of the sauce).
The kitchen can sometimes cook dishes by special request, and in the past I have been able
to order special dishes such as Vietnamese canh chua. Other Thai dishes may also be
available, and when I have had non-menu items they have always been excellent. The menu is
streamlined so they can prepare food quickly, but if I did not find what I wanted I would make a
special request (and I think in many cases they will be able to prepare it).
Even the regular menu has enough choices, though, that I do not think I have yet found all the
best dishes served. I have yet to find anything that I would not want to order again.
