Mi Tierra Café y Panadería
218 Produce RowSan Antonio, TX
(210) 225-1262
Mi Tierra is obviously a San Antonio institution, judging from its popularity. Open 24 hours, it is
surprisingly busy even at late hours. Having lived for years in Austin, I would say that Mi Tierra
is about as good as it gets for Tex-Mex.
A dining companion and I were able to sample several items, and all of them were a hit. I would
say the best items are the grilled meats-- the Chicken Fajita Tacos were great, maybe the
best I've ever had. Carne Asada Tacos were also excellent.
Cheese Enchiladas were good for Tex-Mex, but I know of better ones in Austin. Even
the salsa was surprisingly good-- Tex-Mex salsa is usually wimpy compared to El Paso, but this
one has a good spice to it.
The inside is very nicely decorated, and adds to the sense of festivity.
Be sure to check out the Mexican bakery located at the entrance to the restaurant. You may
be able to get special treats, such as the Rosca sweet bread sold for Día de los Reyes
Magos (Three Kings Day) on January 6. The "baby Jesus" is hidden somewhere in the
bread (He is hidden because of the danger of being found by King Herod). Each person cuts a
piece of the bread, and the one who finds the figurine is expected to host the celebration for
Candelaria, or Candle Mass Day on February 2. While this is an interesting tradition, it is
not easy to find bakeries that actually sell this and other types of traditional bread. Mi Tierra
seems to have just about every type of Mexican baked good imagineable, with the added
bonus that it is available late in the evening (although I do not believe the bakery is open 24 hours, as the restaurant is).
