Szechuan Restaurant
125 S. Main St.Moab, UT
(435) 259-8984
I do not know why, but I am usually pretty surprised to find a good Chinese restaurant in a resort town.
Szechuan Restaurant in Moab is probably the only Chinese restaurant for 100 miles in any direction, so
it is not as if they are competeing with other Chinese restaurants. In addition, many of the people who visit
are there mainly to see the magnificent scenery in southeast Utah before returning home, so restaurants
sometimes have a hard time building up a regular clientele.
Szechuan Restaurant has stayed in business for several years, though, at a time when many other
Moab restaurants have come and gone. I think the secret has been not only because of the popularity
of Chinese cuisine, but the fact that the food here would be considered good even if they had competition
from other Asian restaurants. Szechuan Restaurant used to have a sushi bar that I think is no longer in
operation, but the Chinese food is the mainstay of the restaurant's operation.
A vegetable dish I tried several years ago was good but not overly impressive. A Family Style
Bean Curd dish I ordered more recently had a good sauce, but I did not think the tofu was fried long
enough. The vegetables were good, though, and there was a large enough quantity of food to be filling.
The Mongolian Beef from the lunch menu, though, was the real find here. The beef was good,
and the dish had a flavor that I consider representative of high quality Chinese restaurants (as opposed to ones
that are "Americanized"). I did not think this highly of the tofu dishes, but it was certainly the case with
the Mongolian Beef.
There is a buffet, but it contains MSG. I have certainly found the lunch specials to be a good deal, so
fortunately the buffet is not the only option to ordering from the dinner menu. The tofu dishes, though, are
only available from the dinner menu. In my opinion the dinner items come in portions that are too large
and at too high prices, but lunches are reasonable and offer good food.
