Note: My visit to Toy's Cafe was at the old address (10311 Main St.) |
Toy's Cafe is located in the heart of downtown Bellevue. The building is a little disfunctional-- it has obviously
been around for a long time and seems to have been remodeled to the point that it is almost hard to navigate
through the maze of walls and openings. Perhaps this is the perfect setting, though, for a seemingly
authentic Chinese restaurant with relatively inexpensive prices.
I have heard that Toy's is good for its noodle dishes, and also the Szechuan dishes such as shredded
pork. There are quite a variety of Chow Fun and othe dishes on the menu-- I think they would be worth
trying.
I wanted a tofu dish, and when I saw that Home Style Bean Curd was available with their
"famous Szechwan chili sauce," this was something I had to order. The plate looked somewhat
unappealing, with the large tofu chunks almost floating in the dark sauce that almost overflowed the plate.
The quality, though, was very good. The sauce was not all that spicy, but was more flavorful than most
brown sauces. I thought it was a great tofu dish with the twist of being Sichuanese.
Toy's seems to stay true to its claim of serving "Mandarin & Szechuan Cuisine," with both the menu
selection and the cooking style seeming very authentic Chinese to me. Toy's uses no MSG, and seemed
to me to be one of the better Chinese restaurants in the Seattle area.
